WTRT
ExperimentalA small companion app opens local files here - PDF (full editor), text, images, video, audio, and more. Nothing is uploaded.
- Nothing leaves your machine - it only talks to
127.0.0.1. - No install wizard, no admin permissions - download and run it.
- Never persists - quit it (or "Stop companion" below) and it's gone.
1. Get the companion
No terminal, no install wizard - download and run it once, then right-click any PDF and open it straight from "Open with".
Unsigned, so your OS will flag it as from an unrecognized publisher on first run - expected, not a bug. macOS/Linux: build from source. Read the source first if you'd rather.
Where it installs itself
The first run copies it to one stable, per-user folder and relaunches from there - nothing outside your own profile, no admin permissions touched. Run a fresh download again later and it replaces that same copy instead of leaving duplicates scattered around.
- Windows -
%AppData%\Riftfile\ - macOS - wherever you drag
Riftfile Companion.appinto Applications; that's already the whole install step. - Linux -
~/.config/Riftfile/
Already running? Opening another PDF hands it straight to that same instance instead of starting a second one, and a fresh setup shows a quick confirmation popup so you know it actually worked. No Start Menu entry, no background service - quit it from the tray icon and it's completely gone.
2. File
PDFs open in their own full-screen page - everything else previews right here. Connection status and companion controls now live in the PDF viewer's Settings button.
Not connected - start the companion to see files here.
